Friends Friday | Lauren Gott
This week on Friends Friday I am sitting down with celebrity makeup artist, Lauren Gott. This stunna is a kicka$$, talented MUA with a vibrant personality!! She has worked with some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Now let's see what she's got to say and make sure to follow her - links below!!
How did you get started in the makeup industry?
I was a waify, short redhead model in the 90's (thank you Kate Moss for paving the way for shorties). This was before digital photography. For fun I did self-portraits with a Polaroid camera (the original selfie), and created a side portfolio experimenting and photographing my face in many bizarre and beautiful ways; from avant-garde, colorfully artistic, fantastical, historically significant, and glamorous faces to various ethnicities and even gender-bending transformations. I was crazy fortunate to have worked with some of the best makeup artists in the industry as a model doing a lot of beauty imagery (macro images with a lot of attention to detail and color). I was fascinated and asked a TON of questions. So inevitably, beauty images are what appealed to me with makeup. Photographers saw my wacky Polaroid pages and asked to do my makeup; so my first published work as a makeup artist was on myself, which is kind of embarrassing, cool, and nuts. I made all my gorgeous model girlfriends the test guinea pigs to build my portfolio and the rest is history. I paid serious dues and went from a working model to a struggling artist with lessons learned by assisting a slew of genius artists. Many tried to deter me and man, being a makeup artist in NY is no joke - hard, back-breaking work.
Where was the best place you traveled to for work? tell us about that experience.
Japan!!! It's like another planet, but I feel like I belong. I feel like I am home there. The beauty products, food, landscape, and culture are unparalleled. I also love how a pale complexion is prized in Asian culture, which makes me feel semi-normal instead of like an alien. I was always teased for being scary white, but oddly never for being a carrot top. Conveniently a pale complexion sans brows is a blank canvas and ideal for makeup. Japan rocks my world!
What beauty practice would you like for people to start doing?
Eat for your skin. Cliche but true...radiant skin starts within. Colorful, organic unprocessed food is key.
What is your nightly beauty routine like?
Depends how intense the day was. On a good day I cleanse and exfoliate with baking soda and water in the shower, followed by serum and moisturizer. On a beat day I use a Comodynes wet wipe and moisturizer.
Tell us about a memorable experience you had while working as a professional makeup artist.
I got to do an incredible book of nudes called Sirens of Costa Smeralda for one month in Costa Smeralda, Sardegna. We had the best client, crew, models, photographer (Marco Glaviano), food, location, and accommodations.
Tell us what a day in the life of Lauren Gott looks like.
The schedule varies but here's a typical and ideal day. Through my wonky perspective, I must be aspiring to be a CEO for some fabulous Fortune 500 company. I like to bust my butt to feel accomplished. I wake up EARLY! If my call time isn't 5 am then I'm having coffee and responding to emails and posting something for social media (I'm trying people! This is a major work in progress). I'm out the door at 5:45, gym 6-7, 7-7:30 shower and get dressed, 7:30-8:30 commute (allow myself an hour in LA😨). 9am start, wrap it up usually by 6pm, and then commute back to be home by 7. Then cook and watch a great show (I LOVE period pieces like Game of Thrones, Vikings, or currently watching Big Little Lies & Feud). Crash by 9-10pm. Rinse, Repeat.
We would love to stay connected. Where can we find you?
