Friends Friday | Jenny Patinkin

Welcome to another Friends Friday, where I interview my industry friends and share their stories with you!

I am incredibly excited about today's interview with the sweet and talented Jenny Patinkin. Not only is Jenny a celebrity makeup artist, she also owns her own makeup brush line (maybe you’ve heard me mention them once…or twice…or every single video). How awesome is that? Check out my interview with her below featuring her career history, brush line, and amazing tips for your skin!

How long have you been in the industry?

I've been in the industry about 9 years. I was a late bloomer and didn't start until I was almost 40.

What drew you into pursuing makeup as a career?

I fell into it! I had been a stay at home mom and was looking to go back to work. I was vetting a business concept related to beauty when I met a makeup artist who recognized my abilities. She encouraged me to do some professional training, and I was signed by a huge, international agency about 3 weeks after I completed my course.

What's your most memorable industry experience while working in makeup?

My most recent memorable moment was when someone spotted my makeup brushes on Instagram backstage at the Diane Von Furstenberg AW16 runway show being used by all the biggest supermodels. It was a totally unexpected surprise, but a really exciting one!

3 quick tips to keeping your skin healthy?

  • Use broad spectrum SPF 30+ every single day of the year

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Never, ever, ever go to bed without washing your face

Who is your ultimate beauty/style inspiration?

There are so many women who are gorgeous to look at, but the ones who really inspire me are also smart, successful and substantive. I like a Lazy Perfection look - simple, but with small details, nothing distracting or overworked. Carine Roitfeld and Liberty Ross always look strong and sexy, and Naomi Watts and Lupita Nyongo are pretty fabulous as well.

What are your go-to products for natural everyday makeup?

I am constantly testing new products and rotating things in and out of my kit, but the ones I go back to over and over are ItCosmetics CC Cream, the Kevyn Aucoin Lash Curler, Jouer Matte Bronzer or Hourglass Ambient Bronzer, Maybelline Full 'n Soft Mascara and my beloved Aquaphor.

What was your inspiration behind starting your makeup brush line?

I was so frustrated by the brushes I'd been using -- they felt scratchy on the skin and were slowing me down because they grabbed too much product from the pan and then didn't blend smoothly or evenly. I set out to develop a line that would float product onto the face effortlessly and give a gorgeous, natural look ... and feel amazing while they were doing it. I felt, and still feel, that really excellent tools streamline and simplify the makeup application process.

Any advice on someone looking to break into the industry?

There are literally thousands of different ways to get into the beauty business - it's a massive industry - so instead of agonizing over which is the right path to take, you just have to be fearless and jump in anywhere you can. Start networking, work for free if you have to while you're building your book and take plenty of chances. Almost every single big success I've had has been because of a risk I've taken or a cold call I've made.
