PROBIOTICS: What Are They and What Are They Good For?

I'm sure most of you are aware of the growing probiotic trend. You can't seem to scroll down Instagram without seeing a Kombucha or two in someone's hand. Is it something worth looking into? Is it right for you? Well I'm no doctor, but here are some things that I’ve learned about probiotics. Don't worry, I'll explain what Kombucha is too!!

LOVE this stuff.

LOVE this stuff.

The majority of us hear “probiotics” and think yogurt, but there are actually many different forms of probiotics. Just to list a few:

  • The ever so popular and extremely trendy, Kombucha

  • Fermented Tea

  • Kimchi

  • Fermented Vegetables, usually cabbage

  • Pickles

  • Kefir

  • Unflavored Yogurt

  • Many other fermented food and beverages

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast. They’re great for your overall digestive system, and they are often recommended for people who need help with their gut. However, doctors have said that they can be consumed regularly by anyone!! So let’s get our probiotic on!!

Quick biology lesson - our body has both good and bad bacteria. The good bacteria is used to help fight off infections and strengthen your immune system. Being as probiotics are good bacteria, doctors have found that probiotics have the same results. Consuming probiotics regularly can help to ward off these pesty issues.

No actual study has proven this, but for some reason many people with acne have found probiotics to really help. I think it makes sense…if you help clean up your gut and get rid of the excess bad bacteria building up, your skin will show it. You hear it all the time, but it is the truth, eat for your skin!!!

OK Y'ALL My girl Angelique and I got together to OBSESH about vitamins. Which do we love? Why do we love them? What are our questions about vitamins in general? Do I buy my vitamins from a witch at Whole Foods????

While probiotics aren't anything new, doctors haven’t done a ton of research about them until recently. Just like anything else in life, better to consume in moderation!
